INTRODUCING: The Walter Grip I discovered the Walter Grip in 1988 while playing with the Santa Fe Opera. ; Because it’s counter-intuitive & startingly innovative I used & developed it patiently before promoting it. The Percussive Arts Society published my eight-page article and accompanying 20-minute demonstration video in the February, 2020, issue of Percussive Notes. Filmed/edited mainly by our son Daniel, the film’s demos are by three CU students & me. This no-thumb grip is controversial & received pushback, but some percussionists adopt it wholesale while others have used it for cross training, or therapy while healing from injury. CU students acknowledge its benefits in physical flow and increased resonance. Now that I’ve used only this grip for a while, my personal physical technique is at its best--ever. Walter Grip is discussed, with my photos, in Micheal Udow’s new book, Percussion Pedagogy, Oxford U. Press. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLqsmDjb70Q&t=90s
