Mentoring and Supporting Mid‐Career Scientists Journal Article uri icon

Overview

abstract

  • AbstractMuch‐needed emphasis has been placed on supporting early career scientist. However, the mentoring and support of mid‐career scientists has not received an appropriate level of attention. We define mid‐career as having established a body of work that characterizes one's contribution to, and role in, the research community. At mid‐career, scientists have needs that are distinct from early career. They require mentoring relationships that are more collegial than those typically applicable at early career. In addition, stable funding is needed to support students, post‐docs, and longer‐term projects, to allow for the sustained development of a scientific vision over a decade or more. Programs to provide appropriate support targeted at the needs of mid‐career scientists could be enhanced, along with other types of non‐monetary recognition, and encouragement for collegial relationships that help build careers at this stage.
