Dr. Jillian Turanovic is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology and fellow in the Institute of Behavioral Science, Prevention Science Program. A nationally recognized expert in criminology, she specializes in studying victimization, violence prevention, and the impacts of incarceration. Her research examines school safety, firearm violence, prison conditions, and victim services, with particular attention to how these issues affect youth and marginalized communities. Dr. Turanovic has secured over $7 million in external funding and published extensively on topics of victimization and violence, including three books with leading academic presses. Her work directly shapes policy and practice—from aiding in the development of statewide school safety protocols to evaluating red flag laws and creating model protocols for victim services. She frequently provides expert testimony to state legislatures on matters of school violence, firearm safety, and victim services. Dr. Turanovic received her Ph.D. from Arizona State University in 2015 and has been recognized with several national awards, including the Ruth Shonle Cavan Young Scholar Award from the American Society of Criminology.
