Examines the long and painful transformation, during the modern period of native Chinese concepts about the meaning of life, the proper order of politics and society, the role of the individual, the nature and role of human emotions, the place of the gods, the definition of nation, the proper relations between the sexes, and China's place in the global order. Recommended prerequisite: HIST 1618 or HIST 1628 or CHIN 1012.
